My Story - From Teaching 1,000s to Homeschooling Two

Before I discovered my calling in education, I began my studies with a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology & Emory School of Medicine.

Yes, I have a PhD from two Universities.

I specialized in neuroscience, so I followed up my degree by working at the #1 Rehabilitation Hospital in the United States, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. There, I dedicated myself to understanding learning so I could develop therapies to assist individuals with stroke regain their lives.

During my time in Chicago, I was awarded a NIH grant that allowed me to devote my time to learning the best science-backed teaching techniques. Teaching at two unique universities (Northwestern University and Northeastern Illinois University) with vastly different student populations allowed me to learn how to adapt my teaching to meet the unique needs of students.

After the birth of my first child and growing weary of the Chicago winters, I moved across the country to begin an Assistant Professor job at Arizona State University in the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering.

At ASU, I taught 1,000s of students, perfected my skills in engagement, and developed brand-new psychology-driven education techniques to create learning environments adapted for students who have mental health challenges (clinical anxiety, depression, PTSD).

I was honored to receive multiple teaching awards including winning the school-wide Top 5% Faculty award twice (2021, 2023) as well as the Eric Guibeau Outstanding Teaching Award (2023).

On the outside, my life looked perfect. But at home, my kids were struggling in daycare, I was struggling without them, and none of us were thriving. When the world stopped in 2020 and my kids came home, I was healed by the presence of my children, and I know they were healed by being home. They were peaceful, happy, content. Words I would never use to describe them in the before times.

In the end, I didn’t find my calling, it found me.

I officially started homeschooling in 2021. It would take another 3 years for our family to shift our lives around enough for me to quit my tenured job to full-time homeschool my children.

I resigned in May of 2024. Since then, I've started a science & history club for Elementary kids in my home and started ClarifiEd to help parents, like you, to become their children’s best teachers.

One of the most scary decisions I’ve ever made was leaving the job that I'd dedicated 20 years of my life to, but in the end there is nothing more important than my children educating our world’s future leaders.
