Classics change the brain.
They challenge us to be better versions of ourselves. Reading your children classics is one of the simplest ways to help them become exceptional.
But not every kid come naturally to these beautiful stories.
5 mistake you might be making introducing your kids to classics
Thinking they are too young. The younger the better to introduce children to classics - just start with stories made for kids. The vocabulary might seem too intense but if it's all kids have ever heard, it will become normal to them. Plus their brains are made to pick up these subtleties of languages at these ages
You skipped children's classics. If you have a teenager and you start them reading Shakespeare or Oscar Wilde, expect them to be lost and push back. It takes time to get used to the language and the more thoughtful pace of the classics. You don't have to read them Beatrix Potter but start with classics designed for middle school students before throwing them an opus - unless of course they love them right away - if so, then proceed and congratulations!
You don't take time to discuss them. Books used to be made different. There weren't 1,000,000 books being made every year so books were made to the mused and thought over. Try reading the classics with your kids & make sure to discuss them
You forgot to discuss the context. History should be taught alongside the classics. Otherwise, kids don't fully understand the book & what is happening
You don't take the kids' interests in mind. Classics come in many forms from great adventures to stories where characters don't leave their small community. All are worthy. The goal is to get kids to fall in love with reading great literature, put things in their path that you think they will love - not just books that are on a list.
One of the most terrible things that has become of modern society is that adults hate to read. I think it's because children aren't supported to find books that inspire & enrich them. Make sure this doesn’t happen to your kids!

Memorization isn’t the Problem. Lack of Meaning is
Great words! I agree with all of this! Although I hesitated at first, we just did The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe with our 3 year old last month… and she did great! She absolutely loved it and would pause us when she didn’t understand a word. We also regularly would stop and ask her to recall what she heard and comprehended to make sure she was getting it. She had some pretty astounding connections to the greater allegory at work, as well. She’s been asking to read it again! I am so excited to keep going.
