Great words! I agree with all of this! Although I hesitated at first, we just did The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe with our 3 year old last month… and she did great! She absolutely loved it and would pause us when she didn’t understand a word. We also regularly would stop and ask her to recall what she heard and comprehended to make sure she was getting it. She had some pretty astounding connections to the greater allegory at work, as well. She’s been asking to read it again! I am so excited to keep going.
That's so beautiful!!! Thank you so much for sharing this with me. I love that your daughter already is stopping to ask questions and already starting to understand allegory. Just so beautiful. You are clearly just doing an amazing job. Like you, I was also so surprised at what my young, young children would find gripping. The loved CS Lewis of course but we also recently read The Reluctant Dragon by Kenneth Grahame and the language was so complex both in vocabulary and sentence construction. I struggled sometimes myself but the girls LOVED it! Every time I think "this is too much" they rise. If you are looking for other good books Memoria press has a great read aloud section of books that I read to my girls. =) There are a bunch of great lists out there but I like theirs the best.
